Illinois DUI Risk Education: Essential Information
Program Length
A minimum of 10 instructional hours.

Illinois rules limit each Risk Education session to no more than three hours. The entire program cannot be completed in one day.
What Is DUI Risk Education?
DUI Risk Education is a structured educational program concerning alcohol and drugs, impaired driving, decision-making, legal consequences, personal responsibility, and the prevention of future impaired-driving incidents.
Risk Education is an educational intervention. It is not the same as a DUI evaluation, early intervention, or substance use disorder treatment. Additional services may be required depending on the individual’s DUI evaluation, risk classification, court requirements, or Illinois Secretary of State requirements.

Who May Need Risk Education?
DUI Risk Education may be recommended following an Illinois DUI evaluation. It commonly applies to people classified as:
- Minimal Risk
- Moderate Risk
- Significant Risk
Moderate Risk and Significant Risk recommendations generally include additional intervention or treatment requirements. Clients should follow their complete evaluation recommendation and any instructions issued by the court, probation office, attorney, or Illinois Secretary of State.
What Does the Program Cover?
The Illinois DUI Risk Education curriculum addresses subjects such as:
- Effects of alcohol and drugs on driving ability
- Impairment, judgment, and reaction time
- Alcohol and drug-related driving risk

Enrollment and Required Documents

- Your risk classification and service recommendation
- Relevant court or probation paperwork

- Prior Risk Education records, if transferring providers
Following successful completion, appropriate documentation may be provided to the client or released to an authorized court, probation officer, attorney, or Illinois Secretary of State recipient, as applicable.
In-Person and Online Scheduling
Illinois rules permit DUI Risk Education to be delivered in person or online when applicable requirements are satisfied.

Program Fee
The currently published fee for the complete 10-hour Driver Risk Education program is $300.
